Since social networking appears to be here to stay, don't we owe it to our students to teach them how to use these sites safely and responsibly? Since bringing my students on to a class blog last year, I discovered how little they really know about appropriate Internet use. But how can we teach students to Facebook and Twitter safely when most schools block those kinds of sites?
I just discovered a site made for educators that allows teachers and students to create online communities that are accessible only to them, providing a safe place for students and teachers to network. In addition, teachers can use their site to post homework, videos, handouts, etc. Students can chat via the site, getting help on homework in a safe environment. Since the site is accessible to only that teacher and class, it is the perfect venue for teaching about cyber-bullying and safe online practices.
