Everything in Moderation?

Who ever thought computers would be vilified in the same sentence that television is praised?"The researchers looked at how the use of these media affected the boys’ brainwave patterns while sleeping and their ability to remember their homework in the subsequent days. They found that playing video games led to markedly lower sleep quality than watching TV, and also led to a “significant decline” in the boys’ ability to remember vocabulary words. The findings were…See More

Facebooking First Graders

The other day my principal called my classroom and asked me to send a few of my students (8th graders) down to her office. She said someone had created a fake Facebook page for one of our campus supervisors, and three of my students appeared to be involved. They had copied a picture of the victim from his own Facebook page, and then gave him a name that was a slight variation of his own. Then they filled the page with all kinds of hateful profanity. These kids are so clueless about social…See More

Rugrats online?

I read a fun blog post here about bringing technology to rugrat-age students.  Now I'm curious: how young should we start?  But more important, with what do we start?  What should kindergartners learn to do with technology?  I'd love to hear from teachers at the elementary level who have made some decisions about…See More

I found some examples online where people violated the terms and had their accounts disabled. I thought I might share those. But I also discovered some interesting things in the terms that the kids need to know... many adults probably should, too.…

I can see this as one of those great ideas that goes bad quickly. I wonder if you could talk about how impt. it is to know what you are signing before you do but if you were to be honest- I am guessing that you would have to say that most of us…

Teaching Terms of Service for E-mail

Thumbnail
Has anyone tried teaching their students how to read the Terms of Service that we all have to agree to before opening an e-mail account?  I am trying to teach my 8th graders the very basics of e-mail, and in order to open an account, they need to agree to the terms.  I'm not doing right by media literacy if I tell them to just "click OK" and move on, but there are 16 pages of legalese to wade through!  I thought I could have partners dissect just one page, and then report out to the class, but…See More

I started with just two classes on one blog, then I added two more after I got used to the routine. I'm not sure if I would put 150 on the same blog. It becomes overwhelming for them as well as you -- do they know what to look at? They might…

Safe Social Networking for Schools?

Since social networking appears to be here to stay, don't we owe it to our students to teach them how to use these sites safely and responsibly? Since bringing my students on to a class blog last year, I discovered how little they really know… Continue

The Myth of the Digital Native

Kids today are born with a mouse in their hand, right? They navigate websites intuitively, clicking their way around the Internet with their eyes closed. Their teachers are stuck in the binder-paper-and-#2-pencil routine, while the students go home to blogs, wikis and websites. Our students are the digital natives, while we are the immigrants, relying on pre-teens to show us how to insert a picture into a document...… Continue
