Media Creation: An Emotional Rollercoaster

Posted on June 1, 2010 at 1:30pm 0 Comments

My students and I discussed throughout this past spring semester how there seems to be this misconception that learning to use (and using) new media should afford a frustration-free and anger-free experience. Somehow the newness of technology and its user-friendly characteristics are supposed to make the learning process easier. Yet, for me, a meaningful aspect of making a VoiceThread or a Prezi…

I just discovered it stops about 46 minutes into it (its supposed to be an hour and 11 minutes long). Still interesting things in the first part. The professor is from MIT and helped create Lego Mindstorms. I've just started checking out Scratch. The purpose was to make it easy for kids (8-15) to create and design computer animations using "building blocks". Their concept was modeled after a Kindergarten learning style. Imagine, create, play. Using easier tools (like blocks) to create new things (like towers) to discover deeper concepts (like stability). According to him Scratch has taken on a world of its own. The kids are now creating their own "companies" to pull resources together to create bigger and better computerized stories, projects, etc. It definitely ties into your book - its important for technology to be a current of creativity.

Jessica, I'm using the book in my Teaching Film, TV, and Media course this Fall http://teachingmedialiteracy.pbworks.com
The Teaching Literacy Tools book http://literacytooluses.pbworks.com is being distributed by NWP.
Also, my son and daughter-in-law are moving to Berkeley from LA next Spring, so in Winter, 2011, we'll start spending our winters in that area.

I am getting me educational technology certificate in my district and I am working on some grad homework. One of the articles steered me to a teacher blog that no longer exists. Since I am always eager to find information on the internet I did a search for tech-savvy teacher and poof! I think your site has some very useful resources and tips. I am really happy I found you! I plan to share with others.

hi jessica, thanks for the comment. :) i saw it in my email but didn't read it because i was writing a paper. i was online looking for a quote from your book to include in it, and wound up back here where, lo and behold, the author herself DMed me! isn't technology grand?! :) anyway, i'd love to discuss teaching with tech from school librarian's perspective. you can email me at msannakoval@gmail.com. and thanks, by the way, for linking to ALA/AASL stuff here on the ning. :)

Thanks Jessica. I do have a website I could put somewhere: patriciaglange.org. It has more YouTube papers if anyone is interested in diving deeper into the YouTube research that our chapter drew on. What section of profiles include links? Hope the discussion goes well here.
